Description:
The aim of the research project is the design of new chemotherapeutic agents with multimodal activity by conjugation of nitric oxide (NO)-donor molecules with photosensitizers (PS) endowed with high selectivity towards tumor cells. The synergic interaction with specific living cell targets of cytotoxic nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated upon light irradiation of the PS, represents a strong response to the well-known multi-drug resistance (MDR) issue. The synthesized molecules will be screened on several tumor cell lines in order to identify one or more leads for in vivo studies. The combination of PS with thermal- or photo-NO donor moieties in a single molecule can thus represent a valid response to the demand of new chemotherapeutic agents with improved efficacy and higher selectivity.
