Description:

Community Pharmacy in Europe has recently developed different Services, but differently from State to State and often not jet recognized by local administration.

In 2005 MUR project was the first one payed by National Health Services in UK. The aim is the correct use of medicinal products by patients with the help of pharmacists.

National aim is to evaluate the results of a pilot project which includes 4 areas in the north of Italy. The chosen topic is Asthma. The pharmacists interview the patients, showing them the correct way to use medical devices, to achieve the adherence to the therapy.

In particular, in autumn 2012 the Order of Pharmacists of Turin has received mandate from FOFI (Federazione Ordine Farmacisti Italiani) to realize, in collaboration with the University of Kent (UK), a pilot project for the execution of MUR project in some (about twenty in the initial phase) pharmacies in the Turin’s district.

The project aims to assess the impact of the role of the territorial pharmacist about adherence to therapy and simultaneously reduce waste, applying a model already developed for years in Great Britain and from which there can arise a new model of professional compensation.

Pharmacists involved in the study, after identifying the patients, have been asked to fill out the cards, proposals and shared by the promoters of the Project; the initial goal was to highlight any problems related to existing treatment of the subject included in the draft MUR and highlight critical issues, obstacles or interest relating to the Project itself and then to its applicability in the national territory.

Preliminary results show that the main barriers to the service were lack of coordination with other health care professionals and lack of time.

Although the majority of patients did not believe they had problems with their medication and not also asserted that they had full knowledge and understanding of their medicines, pharmacists identified many specific compliances and pharmaceutical care issues. Moreover they noted potential poor adherence to medication in the half of patients.

Given the good results obtained in spring 2014 was launched the project RE I-MUR as a multicenter controlled study, randomized and clustered, which involves the participation of 10 macro areas nationwide.

Currently patient enrollment was completed and is being the relative phase of the interviews related to adherence to therapy.
