Master II level in
"Food Science and Technology for Human Nutrition - Michele Ferrero"

In the academic year 2018-2019 will be activated the new edition of the second-level Master's degree in "Food Science and Technology for Human Nutrition - Michele Ferrero"

The sixth Master's degree program entitled to Michele Ferrero was completed splendidly in last December, at the ceremony of diplomas and Master's awards, which was held at the Fondazione Ferrero auditorium in Alba.
The participants in the 2016-2017 Master's program ended their studies in September 2017 and obtained degrees with excellent marks.
The two best students and the best thesis were rewarded by the Fondazione Piera, Pietro e Giovanni Ferrero, which also financially supported the students during the course and the stage period. In fact, also for the academic year 2016-2017 the Ferrero Foundation provided for the tuition fee for all the admitted students. In addition, each of them received a grant of the value of  8,000. € to attend the courses of the Master. The Ferrero Group hosted the students in training at its plants, providing them support and guidance of dedicated tutors.

Goal of the master's program
This second-level postgraduate degree aims to provide, to graduates with suitable schooling in different scientific sectors, an interdisciplinary training in food science, technology and human nutrition fields, giving them the skills needed to manage the research and development of new food products, and develop product and process quality. Specifically, for the 2018-2019 edition of the Master's degree, the main focus of the courses will be the "Innovation", with particular regard to "Innovation in Food Technology and Human Nutrition".

 

The second-level Master's degree aims to train specialists with interdisciplinary knowledge in the technological, medical, biological, and chemical fields, suitable for recruitment in the productive system of food manufacturing companies, research and development laboratories, and consulting firms, having a broad and fully-comprehensive overview of the factors that dictate choices in the development of new food products or reformulation of existing ones. The syllabus of the Master's course also takes into account the factors that influence food industry production choices, arising from new consumer demands, lifestyle changes, food-related illnesses and the effects of globalisation on the ethnic composition of the population.


For access to the second-level Master's Degree course, candidates must hold an MSc academic degree (second cycle (master) degree, a five-year tuition degree, laureaspecialistica/laurea magistrale) in accordance with the new Italian university system (pursuant to Ministerial Decree 509/99 or Ministerial Decree 270/04) or an equivalent university qualification obtained abroad, in one of the following fields:

Knowledge of the English language is required and will be will be ascertained during the admission test.

Admission of foreign students

For Italian or foreign students (EU citizen or non-EU citizen) in possession of foreign academic qualifications that have not already been declared equivalent to an Italian degree, and for the purposes of admission to the Master's degree, the Scientific Committee will evaluate the qualification and its eligibility, in compliance with applicable international agreements.

Admission of auditor students
Participants who have the requisites for the Master's Degree interested in further study of the subjects dealt with in the lectures, and wish to improve their professional preparation, may be admitted as auditor students (non-examination students) to participate in Master's Degree lectures. Auditor students will not be allowed to take part to the industry training. At the end of the course, auditor students will receive a certificate of attendance signed by the Director of the Master's Degree. Also the auditor students, as regulated by the Tax and Contribution Regulations of the University of Turin, will pay a tuition fee.


Registration to the admission test/competition is now active.

EU citizen, or non-EU citizen already living in Italy who have an academic qualification awarded abroad must submit the following documentation together with their application:

(a)      Photocopy of a valid identity document, legible and duly signed;
(b)      Photocopy of a valid residence permit (only for non-EU students);
(c)      Photocopy of the tax identification code;
(d)      Curriculum vitae including details of all academic qualifications;
(e)      Second cycle degree achieved awarded by a University, which allows students to continue their university career in the further cycle level. It needs to be provided with a certified translation into Italian, legalization (if required) and "Dichiarazione di valore" (declaration of equal value), a document issued by the Italian Consular and Diplomatic Delegation, competent for the territory or level certification issued by ENIC-NARIC centres (if present);

(f)       Original University study plan, provided with a certified translation into Italian and legalized (if required), including details about passed exams, hours and grades. "Diploma supplement", provided with legalization, can substitute the above-mentioned documents [subparagraphs (e) and (f)];
(g)      Any other title that the candidate intends to present (certificates, publications, etc.), which to be certified as true copies of the original.

The documents requested at letters (e) and (f), except for the "Diploma Supplement", must be translated (the translation is not required if the document is issued in English), authenticated and provided with legalization if required. These documents will be transmitted to the Mobility and International Didactics Office in order to obtain the adequacy evaluation of foreign academic qualification.

For all documentation not appended as an original, Italian and foreign candidates residing in Italy must attach a sworn declaration, pursuant to article 47 of Presidential Decree of 28th December 2000 no. 445  (Template D - Template D Fillable).

Non-EU citizen not living in Italy who have an academic qualification awarded abroad must submit the following documentation together with their application:

(a)      Photocopy of a valid identity document, legible and duly signed;
(b)      Curriculum vitae including details of all academic qualifications;
(c)      Second cycle degree achieved awarded by a University, which allows students to continue their university career in the further cycle level. It needs to be provided with a certified translation into Italian, legalization (if required) and "Dichiarazione di valore" (declaration of equal value), a document issued by the Italian Consular and Diplomatic Delegation, competent for the territory;
(d)      Original University study plan, provided with a certified translation into Italian and legalized (if required), including details about passed exams, hours and grades, or "Diploma supplement", provided with legalization.

The documents requested at letters (c) and (d), except for the "Diploma Supplement", must be translated (the translation is not required if the document is issued in English), authenticated and provided with legalization if required. These documents will be transmitted to the Mobility and International Didactics Office in order to obtain the adequacy evaluation of foreign academic qualification.

If candidates are not able to deliver the "Declaration of value" within the application deadline, they have to fill in the "Template C - Template C Fillable" of this announcement. Subsequently, they will have to submit the required documents upon enrolment. In that way, the Academic Board determines the educational equivalence of the foreign degree.
The candidates admitted to the Master's Degree who are not in possession of all the documentation required, will be enrolled "with reserve". They will have to submit the required documents at least one month before the end of the course (which is identified with the first session of the final exam). If they do not, only a certificate of attendance as an auditor student will be issued.

However, the possession of the entry requirements is mandatory at the time of the application deadline.

Non-EU citizens residing abroad must present their application for admission to the Master's Degree together with their academic qualification(s), to the Department in charge of the Master - DISAFA - ULF Microbiologia agraria e Tecnologie alimentari - Largo Paolo Braccini, 2 - 10095 Grugliasco (TO) - ITALY, within the terms envisaged by the call for admission to the Master's Degree. After the admission to the Master, candidates must apply for the study visa at the competent Italian Consular and Diplomatic Delegation.

For all documentation not appended as an original, Italian and foreign candidates residing in Italy must attach a sworn statement, pursuant to article 47 of Presidential Decree of 28th December 2000 no. 445 .

The Master is a degree course with a restricted number of places, therefore, for the admission to the selections it is absolutely necessary also the on line pre-enrolment (enrolment on competition - Enrolment on masters).

In order to matriculate for the admission test candidates should:

  • Be registered at the Portal of the University of Turin (www.unito.it) and have the credentials (username and password) to access the MyUniTO (Login). If candidates have never been students at University of Turin (UniTO), they must register as "Futuro studente" (prospective student), following the Portal registration instructions;
  • Submit the application for the competition in the on line mode. For the submission of the online application, candidates need to access the area MyUnito (selecting the item "Login" on the home page) and do authentication with credentials (username and password). Select the item "Iscrizioni", which candidates can find in the upper left menu and afterwards the item "Test di ammissione" to go on with the on line application form;
  • Pay the contribution provided for the admission test by the module issued by the on line procedure (print the MAV) and keep the receipt in order to show it, during the recognition phase, the day of the admission test.

Candidates eligible for admission to the Master will be rated according to their academic achievements and an examination. Candidates will have to sit a test (multiple choice in English) to ascertain their basic knowledge of chemistry and biology, followed by an aptitude interview during which their English language skills will be assessed. For the admission to the interview, the candidates must to pass the written test with a minimum score of 21/30. The interview will be enriched by an assessment session intended to evaluate transversal skills and personal characteristics of candidates and to highlight the strengths and weaknesses respect to the requested profile. 
The entrance examination will be held from Monday, November 31, 2018 in Lecture Hall Magna of the DISAFA, Largo Paolo Braccini, 2 - Grugliasco (TO), starting at 10.00 a.m. CET.

At the end of the selection process, candidates will be rated according to the overall result obtained by those admitted, in decreasing order. In case of same score, candidates possessing the academic qualifications required for admission to the Master at the time of selection (graduated candidates) will be selected. For the admission to the Master the candidates, up to a maximum of 12, must achieve a minimum score of 80/100. With the same score, candidates who have obtained the degree with the highest score will be preferred. The Master's Degree will not be run if the number of candidates that fulfil this requirement is less than 8 (eight).

Watch out

In order to be admitted to the selection, candidates must provide for the admission application (Template A) and all documents requested to be sent, and to register for admission on line. The two procedures are complementary; not complying with one of the two involves exclusion from the selection.

Candidates who do not report all the required information in the application will be excluded from the selection.

The simultaneous enrolment to the Master and other university study courses is not allowed.


12 students will be admitted to the Master's degree. The course will not be held if the number of enrollees is less than 8. A further reserve of 4 places will be kept for auditor students.

The Master's degree has an overall duration of 1 academic year. The programme is constituted by 60 university training credits (UTC), of which 40 are for lectures, laboratory sessions and/or guided tours, 18 for training in companies in Italian or abroad, and 2 for the final dissertation.

The topics are organised into four integrated courses (more details are available in the Course synopsis):

• Nutrition and diet (8 UTC) - Coordinator Prof.ssa Simona BO

• Food technologies (12 UTC) - Coordinator Prof. Vincenzo GERBI
• Chemical composition and functional properties of raw material and foods (12 UTC) - Coordinator Prof. Carlo BICCHI

The Master's Degree tuition fee is € 5,000. All the candidates admitted to the Master's Degree, enrolled to the course for the first time (for the admission to the Master the candidates, up to a maximum of 12, must achieve a minimum selection score of 80/100), will benefit from academic scholarships, generously provided by the "Fondazione Piera, Pietro e Giovanni Ferrero", which coverthe total programme's tuition fees (the Fondazione Ferrero will directly pay for the tuition fee).

For students admitted to the Master's Degree as auditor, the tuition fee is € 1,552, including the University enrolment fee (€ 552). The fee will be paid in a lump sum at the time of enrolment.

Completion of enrolment
The procedures to complete enrolment will be communicated with the notification of admission.

Students who are not eligible for a scholarship and fail to pay the fee by the start of lectures will be excluded from the Master's degree. 

Renounce
Participants of any degree admitted to attend the Master's Degree courses who wish to renounce, will have to give a formal notification to the Director. To those who drop out of the Master's course, any paid tuition fees will not be reimbursed.


Scholarship
The following scholarships, as contribution to cover the cost of attendance, will be generously provided by the "Fondazione Piera, Pietro e Giovanni Ferrero":

All the candidates admitted to the Master's Degree (for the admission to the Master the candidates, up to a maximum of 12, must achieve a minimum selection score of 80/100), enrolled to the course for the first time, will be entitled to a contribution for lecture attendance facilitation as reported below:

  1. Italian citizens or EU and Non-EU citizens already living in Italy: € 8,000 (gross amount)
  2. Foreign citizens not living in Italy, positively evaluated by the Scientific Committee: a maximum of five (5) grants with a value of € 13,000 (gross amount)

Awards
Moreover, the following non cumulative awards will be generously provided by the "Fondazione Piera, Pietro e Giovanni Ferrero":

  1. Two (2) awards with a value of € 5,000 for students who obtain the best overall marks within the set course duration.
  2. One (1) award with a value of € 5,000 for the best final dissertation.

The prizes listed a. and b. are not cumulative.

Attendance of lectures is mandatory and must be certified by the students' signature. Participants who fail to attend 25% or more of lessons will not receive the Master's Degree.

Participants obtain the University Credits by passing periodic examinations on the acquired competences of the integrated courses. The Master's grading system complies with the Italian undergraduate one. The required minimum pass grade is 18/30 for each exam.

The Master's Degree in Food Science and Technology for Human Nutrition is awarded after a final examination on the overall skills acquired, taking into consideration the stage activity and the discussion of the student's dissertation. The evaluation of the final exam is expressed on a scale of 110.

In case of non-attendance, low advancement or however reprehensible behaviour, the Scientific Committee of the Master may decide to exclude the participant.
